HMPH! (pronounced “HUMF”) is the three-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT), Jonathan Thatch, and Kitten Boggs. As an instrumental group with guitar, bass, drums, looping pedal and effects, the ingredients are simple but the result is not. Using staples of the math rock genre, such as technical patterned guitar riffs, odd time signatures, and herky-jerky start/stops, the songs greet your ears with a jarring wake up call. A unique sense of melody and structure cement a listening experience filled with unlikely anthems.
HMPH! has two releases on the Haymaker Records label. Their debut full-length album Headrush was released on limited edition cassette and 12-Inch marbled vinyl in 2015. Their follow-up full-length album, the self-titled HMPH! releases on November 15, 2019 and can be pre-ordered now.

- HMPH! release new album “HMPH!”
HMPH! is the three-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT), Jonathan Thatch, and Kitten Boggs.
HMPH!’s second album, the self-titled “HMPH!” will be released worldwide on November 15, 2019 and features their signature math-rock sound with a progressive rock and avant-jazz twist. The songs on HMPH! are more sprawling than on 2015’s Headrush, with lots of detours and left turns along the way. Recorded by the band in their home recording studio, the album had time to evolve, and the complicated arrangements materialized through this process. This album also features heavy basslines provided by Kitten Boggs, a significant addition since their first record. This album is a choose your own adventure of abrupt rhythm changes, dissident chords, or even about-face genre-hops into funk, punk, or samba. “HMPH!” is a different kind of album from a different kind of band.
The album features album artwork by Ryan Lee Toms and Kitten Boggs and was pressed on CD and translucent green vinyl with digital download included. The LP includes a bonus re-working of the track “Trudge Dredge” from the first album. Pre-order now!

Release parties are planned for Friday, November 1st at Farewell Transmission in Kansas City, Missouri (joined by Jorge Arana Trio, Shiny Jets, and DJ Dimesack) and Saturday, November 2nd at Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Kansas (joined by Pale Tongue and After Nations).

- Outer Reaches 2016
For the last three years, Haymaker Records has been a co-sponsor and planner of KC Psych Fest. The festival was rebranded to Outer Reaches this year, with the idea of being more incorporating of music outside of the “psych” genre. The music fest is still boundary-pushing and left-of-center, its just more inclusive of other genres now. We’re very excited to be a big part of the festival again this year. It will be held Friday, Sept. 30th and Saturday, Oct. 1st, 2016 at recordBar. Haymaker acts Be/Non and HMPH! are a part of the lineup this year, as well as 16 other great acts. All the information can be found at www.outerreachesfest.com.

- KC Psych Fest 2015/08/01 The Riot Room
KANSAS CITY, MO. – KC Psych Fest kicks off its fourth year with a night of adventurous music on Aug. 1 at The Riot Room in Kansas City, MO. Co-sponsored by Haymaker Records, Mills Record Company, It’s a Beautiful Day, and Summer Moon Promotions, the show will feature performances by Ancient River, Mysterious Clouds, HMPH!, Psychotic Reaction, Drugs & Attics, and have a special DJ set by Mod Professor.
The 2015 KC Psych Fest will be spread across multiple dates in Kansas City in the late summer and fall with an emphasis on acts that excitingly venture outside of conventional music. More dates and appearances will be announced later. The mission of the festival is to present mind-expanding music from different music genres and provide a platform for Kansas City artists pushing the boundaries of music. This year’s festival continues to build on the positive experiences of the previous three years.
The Aug. 1 show is headlined by psychedelic rock band Ancient River. Based out of the UK and Austin, TX, their wall-of-sound barrage has been honed by extensive touring across the United States and beyond – including appearances at Austin Psych Fest (2010-2012), Los Angeles’ Psycho De Mayo (2014), Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia (2012) and Milwaukee Psych Festival (2015). Psychotic Reaction join the show from rural Oklahoma. Showcasing high energy rock & roll, they draw comparisons to The MC5, Stooges, Roky Erickson, and Skip James. Three Kansas City acts are featured at the event. Mysterious Clouds is a new band that explores aspects of cosmic space music and is comprised of members of Monta at Odds, Expo ’70, and HMPH! Their first release, Vibrations Shake the Path on Haymaker Records, explores the classic 60’s mono mix approach. HMPH! is the two-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT) and Jonathan Thatch. With just drums, guitar, looping pedal, and effects, the concept is simple but the music is not. Their debut full-length vinyl release comes out in August on Haymaker Records. Drugs & Attics are a garage punk trio and have been quickly building a name in the Kansas City music scene. The night closes with the psych / mod / garage groove stylings of DJ act Mod Professor, the alias of legendary Kansas City / New York DJ Ray Velasquez. The event starts at 8:30PM and is a full night of entertainment.
