KC Psych Fest 2015-08-01 The Riot Room

KANSAS CITY, MO.KC Psych Fest kicks off its fourth year with a night of adventurous music on Aug. 1 at The Riot Room in Kansas City, MO. Co-sponsored by Haymaker Records, Mills Record Company, It’s a Beautiful Day, and Summer Moon Promotions, the show will feature performances by Ancient River, Mysterious Clouds, HMPH!, Psychotic Reaction, Drugs & Attics, and have a special DJ set by Mod Professor.

The 2015 KC Psych Fest will be spread across multiple dates in Kansas City in the late summer and fall with an emphasis on acts that excitingly venture outside of conventional music. More dates and appearances will be announced later. The mission of the festival is to present mind-expanding music from different music genres and provide a platform for Kansas City artists pushing the boundaries of music. This year’s festival continues to build on the positive experiences of the previous three years.

The Aug. 1 show is headlined by psychedelic rock band Ancient River. Based out of the UK and Austin, TX, their wall-of-sound barrage has been honed by extensive touring across the United States and beyond – including appearances at Austin Psych Fest (2010-2012), Los Angeles’ Psycho De Mayo (2014), Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia (2012) and Milwaukee Psych Festival (2015). Psychotic Reaction join the show from rural Oklahoma. Showcasing high energy rock & roll, they draw comparisons to The MC5, Stooges, Roky Erickson, and Skip James. Three Kansas City acts are featured at the event. Mysterious Clouds is a new band that explores aspects of cosmic space music and is comprised of members of Monta at Odds, Expo ’70, and HMPH! Their first release, Vibrations Shake the Path on Haymaker Records, explores the classic 60’s mono mix approach. HMPH! is the two-piece math-rock outfit of Ryan Lee Toms (RLT) and Jonathan Thatch. With just drums, guitar, looping pedal, and effects, the concept is simple but the music is not. Their debut full-length vinyl release comes out in August on Haymaker Records. Drugs & Attics are a garage punk trio and have been quickly building a name in the Kansas City music scene. The night closes with the psych / mod / garage groove stylings of DJ act Mod Professor, the alias of legendary Kansas City / New York DJ Ray Velasquez. The event starts at 8:30PM and is a full night of entertainment.

Event details and advance ticket information are available at ticketfly and the Facebook event page.

2015-07-24 Haymaker Showcase

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Kansas City independent record label Haymaker Records is proud to host its first showcase party on Friday, July 24th at The recordBar. The event, highlighting the first year of Haymaker Records, will feature five musical acts from the Haymaker Records roster and serve as a preview for three full-length vinyl albums to be released by the label over the summer and fall.

The show opens with the three acts with upcoming album releases. Label newcomer and shoegaze indie rock band Riala will see the release of their first album Be Here | Be There in early fall. Math rock duo HMPH! will showcase their technical guitar and drum wizardry in preparation for the release of their first album Headrush due out this summer. Twenty-year Kansas City rock legend Brodie Rush and his band Be/Non will entertain with the spaced-out rock sounds of their upcoming fall release Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic. Closing out the night are sets by Schwervon! and the Jorge Arana Trio. Indie pop duo Schwervon! relocated to Kansas City in 2013 after a decade as a band in New York City. Having completed a month-long tour of the midwest and east coast, Kansas City anxiously awaits their return. The night ends with the Jorge Arana Trio. The Jorge Arana Trio are a three-piece instrumental jazz-fusion math rock hybrid that were the first band to be featured on Haymaker Records. The Oso EP, released on vinyl exactly a year ago, was met with high praises from local and national media and the band recently completed a three-week tour of south and west coast in May.

A compilation called “Fairgrounds” was released by Haymaker Records on January 1st and featured label artists as well as friends of the label. All the musical acts playing the Summer Showcase Party are featured on the compilation and it is a free download at Haymaker Records bandcamp.

Monta at Odds Video “Android Dreams” Featured at European Media Art Festival

Robots of Munich Finds a Home at Long-Running European Media Art Festival

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Kansas City artist and videographer Barry Anderson will have featured his video for the Monta at Odds song “Android Dreams” at the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, Germany on April 25, 2015. The video will premier as part of the film program Tick Tack Ton. An institution since 1987, the European Media Art Festival is one of the most influential forums of international Media Art. As a meeting point for artists, curators, distributors, galleries and an audience of experts the festival has a great impact on the topics and aesthetics of Media Art.

Synthesizer-based psychedelic rock band Monta at Odds released the album Robots of Munich on Kansas City independent record label Haymaker Records in November 2014. The storyline questions human and robot empathy, following a group of androids who survived the slaughter at the uprising in Munich. As they escape to South America, the small group delves into the crumbling culture in an attempt to grasp humanity and make the most of a limited lifespan spent evading the pursuit of the android hunter. Anderson’s video reflects these aesthetics throughout the presention.

The official video for “Android Dreams” can be viewed at vimeo.com/112441129. Review the schedule for the Tick Tack Ton program of European Media Art Festival at www.emaf.de/english/timetable/tick-tack-ton.html. Monta at Odds will be performing a special set of music as Mysterious Cloud on May 12th, 2015 at recordBar in Kansas City. Psych bands Ancient River and The Myrrors will be joining the show, presented by KC Psych Fest and Summer Moon. More details available at www.therecordbar.com/event/778687-ancient-river-kansas-city/
